The Town of Wappinger will conduct a 9/11 10th Anniversary Service and Commerative Ground-Breaking Ceremony at the future site of the Sgt. Mark C. Palmateer Memorial 9/11 Park on Sunday, September 11th at 8:30am. The location of the new park is at the intersection of Route 9 and Old Hopewell Road, adjacent to DCH Wappingers Falls Toyota. The Town of Wappinger will be receiving a 13 foot section of steel recovered from the World Trade Center, weighing 2,700 pounds. The piece of steel will be escorted into the ceremony by town fire, police, and emergency medical units. The steel will become a permanent part of the completed memorial.
The Sgt. Mark C. Palmateer Memorial 9/11 Park will serve as a memorial for Sgt. Mark C. Palmateer, the first Dutchess County soldier killed in the line of duty in the War on Terror, as well as all service members and first responders who lost their lives on and since September 11th. Sgt. Palmateer, 38, originally from the Town of Wappinger, lost his life on June 26, 2008 during combat in Afghanistan.
