Diversity Gains Are Slow In Elected Offices

The Poughkeepsie Journal reports on Jan. 15:

When Francena Amparo was sworn in Jan. 3 as a member of the Dutchess County Legislature, she became only the fourth member of a minority group currently holding county, state or federal office here.

In a county where about 25 percent of its residents are from a minority group, Amparo, Jeter-Jackson, Roman and President Barack Obama are the only ones in office as a result of elections held in the mid-Hudson Valley.
