Legislative Report for August 14, 2014

Activities:  Continued my review of the 2016 Proposed County Budget and conducted research pertaining to the resolution reducing the hours of Dutchess County Airport operations.  Attended the Board Meeting regarding the same.  Addressed some commuter concerns regarding the MTA and parking tickets being issued at the New Hamburg Train Station by the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department.  Responded to calls and emails regarding the airport; the fight for increase in wages; criminal justice reform and our mental health crisis; economic development; family services and affordable housing; the 2016 County Budget; the Wappinger FEMA LOMR Application; and upcoming community events.

Bills: Voted against the 2016 Proposed County Budget and the resolution  reducing the hours of Dutchess County Airport operations.

Activities: Attended the Metro North Railroad Commuter Council meeting and the Wappinger Historical Society meeting.  Spoke with a representative from Congressman Maloney’s office and a representative from FEMA regarding the revised FEMA Flood Plain Maps and in communication with constituents regarding same.  Responded to multiple calls and emails regarding: the county airport; domestic violence concerns; item pricing; Common Core and the lack of diversity in the local public school districts; voting rights information; the energy tax; the repeal of the energy tax; the MTA payroll tax; DC Eastern Gov’t Center; hydrofracking and local community events. Conducted research regarding crude oil spills, utility easements and the county jail.

Events: Organizing the 3rd Annual Southern Dutchess Health and Wellness Fair at Mesier Park in the Village of Wappingers Falls on Saturday, June 7th. Sponsoring a Blood Drive June 7th as well. The rain date is Sunday, June 8th.

Letter:  Signed on a letter for calling for an immediate moratorium on crude oil shipments on barge/train on/near our rivers. Also signed on a letter calling on state officials to allow local governments to set their own minimum wage rates.

Activities: Attended and sat on a panel for a young girls empowerment lecture. Attended the County Executive’s Town Hall Forum at the Wappinger Town Hall. Also attended a New Year’s Parisian Celebration and a Wappinger Democratic Committee meeting. Met with a constituent regarding Common Core, the county energy tax and economic development. Conducted outreach to local churches and community leaders regarding various county issues. Responded to multiple calls and emails regarding the county airport’s feasibility study, item pricing, Common Core and a possible school closing, home foreclosures, voting rights information, the energy tax, hydro fracking, college scholarships, job opportunities and the need for youth programs. Also had various communications regarding the MTA audit and the upcoming Metro North Customer Outreach Meetings.

Metro North Railroad Train Derailment

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by this morning’s Metro North Train derailment. This was the 5:54am train out of  Poughkeepsie.  I ride the Hudson Line train Monday through Friday to commute to work.  I currently serve on the Metro North Railroad Commuter Council and I am sure we all share the same concerns, SAFETY being one of them.
